It depends entirely on your fireplace type — there’s no single answer. A wood-burning fireplace needs a functioning damper. A vent-free (ventless) fireplace doesn’t have one at all, by design. And a gas fireplace with a standing pilot needs its damper permanently held slightly open, never fully closed — which is the opposite of how a wood-burning damper should be treated.
What a Damper Actually Does
A damper is a plate or valve inside the flue that controls airflow — open to let smoke and combustion byproducts escape while a fire burns, closed to stop conditioned indoor air from escaping up the chimney when the fireplace isn’t in use.
Wood-Burning Fireplaces: Damper Required
A wood-burning fireplace needs a working damper. Keep it fully open before lighting a fire and the entire time it burns, so smoke and carbon monoxide vent outside rather than into the room. Close it once the fire is completely out and cooled, to stop drafts and heat loss. A wood fireplace with no damper, or a damper stuck open, will lose conditioned air constantly; one with a damper stuck closed risks smoke and CO backing up into the house the next time it’s used.
Types of Dampers
- Throat damper — a metal plate near the base of the chimney, just above the firebox.
- Top-mount damper — installed at the top of the chimney, operated by a cable, and generally considered more effective at stopping drafts since it seals higher up the flue.
Gas Fireplaces with a Standing Pilot: Damper Held Open, Never Fully Closed
This is the detail most often gotten backwards. A gas fireplace with gas logs and a standing pilot light produces a small, continuous amount of carbon monoxide from that pilot flame — even when the main burner isn’t running. If the damper were fully closed, that CO would have nowhere to go. For this reason, gas log sets are installed with a damper clamp that physically prevents the damper from closing more than about half an inch, so pilot exhaust always has an escape path. When the main burner is actually running, the damper should be fully open. Never remove the damper clamp or force a gas-log damper fully shut — this is a genuine carbon monoxide safety mechanism, not an energy-efficiency suggestion.
Ventless (Vent-Free) Fireplaces: No Damper, No Flue

“Can you use a fireplace without a damper” only has one answer once you know which of these three categories your fireplace is in: required and actively managed (wood-burning), required-but-held-open (gas with a standing pilot), or genuinely not applicable (vent-free).
