How To Make a Wood Stove Cover

A wood stove can be used as a heating source in the cold winter months.

So for those days that you don’t have firewood, this article will teach you how to make a wood stove cover.

Materials:

Materials

  • Bucket or paint pan
  • 3 ft x 3 ft tarpaulin (to cover the bucket)
  • One-inch thick, soft material (cotton) – I use an old bed sheet that is no longer used. This is just enough for one of these covers.
  • 3 x 4 ft piece of wood: This is the wood stove cover frame.
  • One-inch thick hard material (plastic) – I use an old chopping board that is not used anymore.
  • One carpenter nail for every 10 inches of the length of the wood stove cover frame
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Scissors or knife
  • Orange marker and pencil(eraser)

Instructions

  1. Place the 1-inch thick hard plastic material over the bottom of the bucket, resting on the wooden frame.
  2. Cut along all of the edges of the sheet, leaving about 2 inches from each end to fold over.
  3. Fold in half, then fold in half again, like an accordion.
  1. Before flattening it out, draw a pencil line on both sides of your wood stove cover so that it is easier to fold out when ready to use it.
  2. Once your wood stove cover is folded, place it around the bucket. The wood stove cover will be a bit bigger than the bucket, so you will need to tuck in the extra space on the sides and underneath by pushing down on it with your hand.
  3. Measure up from the bottom of the wood stove cover frame to where you want to put your first nail.
  4. Put the first nail in on one of the sides. If you want to add more pins, ensure they alternate from top to bottom. If you place all nails at the same height, it will be hard to tie down the wood stove cover.
  5. Trim off any excess material with your knife or scissors.
  6. Use your orange marker to color in the wood stove cover frame before you put the finish on.
  7. You can use normal water-based gouache or paint as a general finish. I used a spray can for my wood stove cover to give it a rough look. This will allow the wood stove cover to breathe rather than get too hot from direct contact with the skin or materials inside your house, which may cause burns.
  8. Spray paint on the wood stove cover will make a nice finished look.
  1. Put your finishing touches, such as paint brushes, washi tape, and any other decoration you want to decorate the wood stove cover.
  2. Once you are happy with your wood stove cover, the rest is pretty simple.
  3. Tuck in any excess material around the sides and underneath by pushing down on it with your hand.
  4. Once you are happy, flatten out your wood stove cover as much as possible with your hands on both sides of the wooden frame and make sure it is evenly flat and that all corners have been safely tucked in.
  5. Use a carpenter’s nail to tie the wood stove cover to the side of the bucket. If you want it to be even more secure, use two pins on opposite sides of the wood stove cover to tie it down.
  6. Put your wood stove in place by lifting it, placing it on top of the wood stove cover, and tucking in any excess material around its sides and underneath.
  7. Put your bucket in a place where it is watertight. Use taping to secure it to stay in place and not have problems draining as you use the wood stove.
  8. If you do not have a wood stove, you can use this idea to make a fireproof tarp. Overlap the edges on the sides and underneath by pushing down on them with your hand so that the wood stove cover can sit nicely over the top.
  9. Finally, you can use it as a patio cover. Overlap the edges on the sides and underneath by pushing down on them with your hand so that the wood stove cover can sit nicely over the top.

Conclusion

This wood stove cover is a water-proof tarp. It will keep anything underneath it dry and protect from the wind by keeping the heat in. Not to mention, it makes a great decoration as well!
